HEE announces Training Places for 2,000 Nursing Associates

On 12th October 2016, Health Education England (HEE) has announced that it will be offering more than 2,000 training places for nursing associates over the next two years.

In this December, around 1,000 nursing associates will start their training in a new role, aiming to deliver quality hands on patient care and support to nurses and staff.

HEE has also said that there will be a second wave of 1,000 trainees, which will double the anticipated 1,000 posts. The second wave of trainees was brought in due to a high level of interest in the nursing associates role and high demand from providers wanting to offer training places.

The nursing associates will be trained in the eleven partnership sites over a two-year period. The eleven sites were chosen after HEE invited employers of health and care staff and education providers to work in partnership to submit bids to pilot the new nursing associate role in June 2016.

The training sites include a range of organisations including higher educational institutions, acute, mental health trusts and hospices, community, primary care services and care homes.

In December 2015, the new nursing support role was announced by the under Secretary of State for Care Quality Ben Gummer MP. The new role was introduced to bridge the gap between health and care support workers, who have a care certificate and graduate registered nurses. The role offers opportunities for health care assistants to progress into nursing roles.

Chief nursing officer for England, Jane Cummings said the nursing associate role is a “positive and welcome step forward”.

She added that the new nursing associate role will provide an exciting opportunity for those who want to progress their careers in the field of health and care.
