The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has appointed Gill Walton, as a new chief executive of RCM to succeed Professor Cathy Warwick later this year.
On 5th May 2017, the RCM made the announcement to mark thousands of RCM midwives and Maternity Support Workers (MSW) coming together for the international day of the midwife 2017.
Currently, Gill Walton works as the Director of midwifery and maternity services at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, and is an experienced midwife and leader. At University College Hospital, Walton started nursing and then undertook her Midwifery training at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton. Earlier she has also held the position of the director of midwifery at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, as well at Barking Havering and Redbridge and John Radcliffe in Oxford.
Walton has also directed numerous transformation programmes for maternity services and been involved in different national maternity-related assignments. Currently, she is involved in a Better Births Choice and Personalisation Pioneer Programme and is actively involved in setting up a Local Maternity System in Hampshire, Southampton and Portsmouth.
She has also been involved in national policy and strategy development, including work with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), RCM and Department of Health (DoH) and actively supports improvement and development in other maternity services in the UK.
Commenting on her appointment as new chief executive of RCM, Walton said that she is very excited to have been appointed to the role of Chief Executive and General Secretary for the RCM, an organisation she have tremendous respect for. She is looking forward to working with members from all 4 countries of the UK, to support cement a positive future for maternity support workers, midwives and maternity services at this time of great change.
The chair of the RCM Board, Dr Susan Way said that she is very delighted with the appointment of Gill as the next Chief Executive of the RCM. Gill has a wealth of experience that will be a benefit to the College and she look forward to working with her.
