Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the regulator of nursing and midwives in the UK. Anybody who wants to work as a nurse and midwife in the UK, must be registered to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). NMC maintains a registration process which allowed nurses and midwives to be eligible to practice in the UK. Each year the NMC receives over 22,000 newly qualified nurses and midwives from education institutions.
NMC sets standards of training, education, performances and conduct for nurses and midwives so that they could provide high quality health service throughout their careers. The nurses and midwives who have successfully completed their nursing and midwifery program can apply for the NMC registration. NMC has approved higher education institution to deliver the programme in all over the UK. When you first apply for the registration in NMC, you must have an experience of practicing nursing and midwifery for at least a year.
Nurses and midwives must follow the code of conduct provided by NMC which states how they should work and behave. NMC has set the standard to ensure that nurses and midwives have right knowledge and qualities when they start to work. Once you registered with the NMC, then you can start practicing in National Health Service (NHS) and other private health care institution. You need to revalidate to NMC in every three years in order to make sure that you are staying up to date in your professional practice and fit for the job.
The Registration of NMC consists of 3 parts.
The nurses part of the register is divided into four fields of practice.
If you are from outside the UK, then to work as a nurse or midwife in UK you must need to meet the immigration condition. You also need to be registered in the country you are trained in and have at least 12 months of practice in nursing and midwifery. You must score 7.0 in each band of International English Language test (IELTS) as English language requirements.
