Registration Requirements for Overseas Nurses – NMC

Many nurses and midwives wants to work and live in the United Kingdom. Before working as a nurse or midwife in the UK, you must get registered to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Below are some of the registration requirements for nurses who are from outside the United Kingdom.

Language requirement 

English is the main language which is spoken and written in the UK. The applicant who are from outside the UK must take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam before starting the NMC application process. You must achieve a score of 7.0 out of 9 in each band of IELTS test i.e. listening, reading, writing and speaking. This is a compulsory requirement for overseas nurses who want to work in UK. Your IELTS test results will only be valid for two years.

Practice Requirements

You are required to have at least 12 months of full time or part time work practiced as a registered nurse or midwife in your home country for registration in NMC. If you are qualified for longer than 12 months then you must have also practiced for at least 450 hours in the previous three years. Work Practice include administrative, supervisory, teaching, research and managerial roles along with direct patient care. Any practice you perform will be accepted by NMC only if you are practicing as a registered nurse and midwife.

Registration requirements

When you apply for registration with NMC, you must hold a current license or registration approved by the licensing authority of your country from where you are qualified or have been practicing. You must provide all the details of practice taken as a registered nurse or midwife including registration certificates and verification documents.

Education requirements

You are required to have successful completion of 10 years of school education before your nursing studies. And you must have at least 3 years of nursing education.

Overseas Nursing Program

After your application meets the standard of NMC’s, you will be required to take the Overseas Nursing Programme (ONP) before your registration completes. The ONP includes the UK law, health and safety issues, record keeping, drugs administration and NMC code of conduct studies.
