NHS England’s National Medical Director, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh has announced that he will be stepping down from his position at the end of 2017 after 10 years in the role.
Professor Sir Bruce Keogh has been appointed as Chair of Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and will take up this important role when he leaves NHS England. He will replace current chair of the trust, Dame Christine Braddock, who said she is ‘pleased’ to hand over to Keogh to continue their ‘outstanding work’.
During his time at NHS England, Sir Bruce Keogh significantly led the Keogh review, which inspected 14 hospitals with high mortality rates, and placed 13 of them in special measures.
Keogh said he recognised that it’s the time to make a change. Now he has the opportunity to focus his attention on improving services for women and children in his home city.
Commenting on the news, the Chief Executive of NHS England, Simon Stevens said that Professor Sir Bruce Keogh has given superb medical leadership to the National Health Service (NHS) and has been a great source of wisdom and advice to all.
Chris Hopson, the chief executive of NHS Providers praised Sir Bruce Keogh for walking a “difficult tightrope” in his tenure with professionalism, integrity and skill.
He further added that it is vital that the public should have confidence in the capability of the NHS to deliver high-quality care, and Keogh has provided a reliable voice of wisdom and experience on some difficult issues.
The University of Birmingham welcomed Professor Sir Bruce Keogh as chair of the Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and said that Sir Bruce Keogh will be a huge asset to the trust. They look forward to welcoming him back to the city and to working closely with him through their Birmingham Health Partners alliance.
